Next generation pancreatic cancer cell lines that elucidate patient-to-patient differences prior to clinical trials

Our pancreatic cancer cell models overcome the limitations of traditional cell lines, transforming the quality and value of in vitro studies. Pancreatic cancer is a challenging disease target. Tumors don’t often conform to standard definitions and may morph into other cancers in response to treatment.

Existing cell lines undermine efforts towards better, personalized, therapies for this complex, deadly disease. Poorly characterized and unrepresentative of the tumors of origin, the quality of existing cell lines is suspect, resulting in irreproducible studies.


Existing cell lines only represent one patient. It is critical to analyze how a drug will respond in a range of patients with different characteristics. However, it is currently only possible to assess drug response in a wider population during clinical studies. Our next generation pancreatic cancer cell lines, named Stew, Chocolate and Basket, represent a range of patients with different characteristics. They have a clear ancestral link to defined patient tumors, and they elucidate patient-to-patient differences pre-clinical.

Stew, Chocolate and Basket deliver the reproducibility and clinical relevance required to improve R&D success for a difficult disease. They represent a major breakthrough relative to existing cell lines with respect to:

  • Authenticated heritage
  • Patient specificity
  • Stability
  • Faithful heterogeneity and relevance
  • Accompanying documentation
  • Characterized response to established therapies

We have identified a panel of drugs that represent a relevant breadth of
established, baseline treatment choices, enabling the critical evaluation of drug response differences in our patient cohorts.

The study uses the Genomics of Drug Sensitivity in Cancer (GDSC) database to establish a context for the individual drug response of our patient-specific models.
